Violations in Palm Beach Decreased Over Memorial Day Weekend 2015

Despite South Florida police departments having prepared, as they do every year, for chaos and mayhem during the holiday weekend that just passed, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, there was a decrease in violations and 911 calls for police service during this past Memorial Day Weekend.

As our Delray Beach and West Palm Beach criminal defense lawyers know, decreases in documented criminal incidents likely indicate a decrease in actual criminal activity, especially during a weekend like the one that just passed, when police are out and about looking for people breaking the law.

The decrease in violations is reflected in a number of ways; to begin with, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the department issued no citations for county ordinance beverage violations (such as drinking in a county park).

In addition, as our Delray Beach and West Palm Beach criminal defense lawyers know, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office received four hundred calls for police service during this past Memorial Day Weekend, down significantly from the 564 calls the department received during the weekend last year. Further, the department made 12 arrests this Memorial Day Weekend, roughly half of the amount they made last year over the holiday weekend, and the department reported zero vessel crashes this year.

These are strong numbers, indicating that the decrease in violations was more than just a fluke. So, how do we account for the marked decrease in criminal incidents over the holiday weekend? According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the drop in violations is due to an increase in police presence. But, as we know, an increase police presence doesn’t just deter would-be criminals, it also increases the likelihood that criminals will be caught; in other words, increased police presence could just as soon explain an increase in criminal citations as it could a decrease.

As our Delray Beach and West Palm Beach criminal defense lawyers at the Law Offices of Leifert & Leifert know, we must give credit to the civilian populations of Florida, particularly that which resides in Palm Beach County. Better judgement and safer planning produces good results, and the better results have been quantified by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, as outlined above.

With Palm Beach County Memorial Day Weekend 2015 arrest and citation numbers down significantly from those of last year, as South Floridians, we should be proud and hopeful about the direction in which Palm Beach County is headed.
