South Florida Criminal Attorneys Discuss Immigration Sweep
Last week, an immigration sweep in South Florida led to the arrest of nearly 90 foreign nationals that authorities say were convicted criminals who will be deported or convicts who were in the country illegally.
According to authorities, five of those arrests were in the Florida Keys, 24 were in Broward County, 11 were in Palm Beach County, and 48 were in Miami-Dade County. Throughout Florida and Puerto Rico, authorities made 258 arrests.
Three of the people arrested had been previously convicted of murder. Over a hundred were previously convicted of assault. Several of those arrested will face additional federal charges for re-entering the United States after being convicted of a crime and being deported. Felony re-entry into the US carries a penalty of up to two decades behind bars.
Led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the sweep was part of the largest operation targeting illegal immigrants ever conducted in the Southeast.
